O. Henry Middle School Choir is a two-tier class for students who are interested in singing and performing. Tier one girls will be learning beginning fundamentals with a soprano/alto class, focusing on women's choir material. Tier one boys will be learning beginning fundamentals with tenor/bass class focusing on men's choir materials. Tier two is a mixed choir class studying four-part harmony in a SATB show choir.
All choirs will teach four basic strands- preconception, creative expression/performance, historical and cultural heritage, and critical evaluation- provide broad structures for organizing the knowledge and skills of choir students. During the year, the choir members will be studying a variety of music styles from Pop, Rock, Jazz, and Classical. The students will gain singing skills in sight singing, proper vocal technique, and light music theory. Quarterly grades are based on singing samples, class work, and concert performances.

Beginning Choir is for anyone who wishes to learn to sing. This choir is performance oriented. Students learn the basics of good vocal tone and how to sight-sing. Students go on all field trips.

Cantata Show Choir
This choir is made up of 7th and 8th grade singers who are not interested in serious competition but sing for the enjoyment of singing. This choir is performance oriented; grades are based on performance attendance. Students go on all field trips, however, there is less emphasis on their UIL ratings and more emphasis on collaboration, team spirit, and goal setting.
FAQ
Can you do other activities and still be in choir?
Yes! Choir does not have after school commitments, except three concerts. We have a Fall Concert, Winter Concert and Spring Concert.
What are the field trips?
The choir goes on field trips to sing and then eat lunch (usually to the mall!) At the end of the year we take a trip to Fiesta Texas to sing in the park. We also have a lock-in once a year.
What kind of music does the choir sing?
The choirs sing Pop, Hip-hop, Jazz, Classical, Choral, Multi-Cultural and anything we choose. It varies year to year.
